Microdermabrasion

In the quest for youthful, vibrant skin, men and women share a common desire: to look their best regardless of age.

Microdermabrasion has been used to treat millions of satisfied patients and offers a virtually pain free alternative to chemical and laser peels. This gentle resurfacing procedure is ideal for treating the following skin problems:-

  • Ageing and sun damaged skin
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Mild acne and chickenpox scarring
  • Blackheads and white heads
  • Altered superficial pigmentation and stretch marks

Medical Microdermabrasion can be performed on all skin types, it's fast, virtually pain free and produces immediate results with no downtime.
Our expert team has in excess of 15 years experience and have completed many successful treatments. Rest assured you are in safe hands. All procedures at Melanin Aesthetics and Laser Clinic are performed by fully qualified practitioners to ensure the highest ethical standards are maintained at all times.

How does the treatment work?

Microdermabrasion is a gentle technique of exfoliation performed using a fine diamond chips. The
surface of the skin under pressure are immediately vacuumed back up. The procedure removes the unwanted dead and outermost layer of skin cells to reveal the fresher more youthful looking skin beneath. In addition to this cleansing action microdermabrasion also improves the effectiveness of other non invasive procedures.

How long does it take and does it hurt?

The average microdermabrasion session takes less than 30 minutes depending on the skin condition and area to be treated. There is virtually no discomfort
or recovery time and normal activities can be resumed immediately.

How many treatments are required?

A package of 4-6 treatment sessions at 1-2 weeks interval is initially recommended.

Are there any side effects following treatment?

Mild redness may occur similar to sunburn, make-up can be applied immediately and there is little or no recovery time needed post treatment.

What are the costs likely to be?

The consultation is offered FREE of charge with no obligation to undergo treatment. The price of each session depends on the skin condition and size
of area to be treated.

Can all areas of the body be treated and does skin colour make a difference?

All areas of the body can be treated but it should be emphasized that resurfacing techniques work best on facial skin. All types of skin colour can be
treated except dark skinned Afro-Caribbean.

What is the difference between microdermabrasion, chemical peels and laser skin resurfacing?

The advantage of medical microdermabrasion is low risk and rapid results compared to traditional resurfacing techniques such as dermabrasion, chemical
peels and laser resurfacing. This fact is both its advantage and its limitation. Microdermabrasion results in rapid healing and little risk due to very superficial epidermal injury, hence only shallow scars and fine lines can be addressed. It is not effective for deep wrinkles and scars because these lesions extend into the deeper dermis. Patients with these problems are best treated with more aggressive techniques such as laser resurfacing.

Is microdermabrasion safe?

There is no evidence to suggest whatsoever that treatment can lead to skin disorders or increased risk of skin cancer.

Exfoliation treatments are based on the principles of wound healing. By wounding and removing the uppermost layers of the skin in a controlled manner, cell renewal is stimulated with regeneration of a healthier epidermis and dermis. Histological evaluation of facial skin after repeated microdermabrasion treatments demonstrates a reparative wound-healing process with regeneration of a compacted stratum corneum and a smoother epidermis. Skin hydration increases with improved epidermal barrier function, and fibroblast stimulation increases dermal thickness through production of new collagen and elastin.
